Roland Presents at Kettleson Memorial Library
Roland presented to a crowd of 30-40 at Kettleson Memorial Library. Students from the SEER School surprised the audience by attending the event in costumes representing the covers of Roland Smith's books. Please stay tuned to the blog for pictures.

Hello readers!
Smith´s visit to Kettleson was something different. He is a fast speaker so if you are going to be listening to him, hold on to your seat and count how many times he breathes while he speaks. I would say around ten times per hour.
He shared his views about writing, his views about animals, continents, indigenous people, readers and even Latin words.
Now, to tell you the truth, what I really loved yesterday was our beautiful Sitka students. The SEER school kids are just AWESOME. They were creative, good listeners and asked lots of good questions.
Thanks everybody for coming to Kettleson and special thanks to Pam, who baked all those goodies that you have in your stomach right now. Get ready for our next author´s visit!
Maite Lorente,
Youth Services Librarian

It was fun making the costumes for Mr. Smith. His presentation was interesting because he was funny and he made jokes. He showed pictures of the animals he helped.

I liked that Mr. Smith told us about how he writes his books and the steps he takes to write. I liked the different words that he uses to describe certain parts of his stories or the animals.

I learned a lot from Mr. Smith. It seems like a lot of fun being a marine biologist. It seemed like a lot of fun saving the red wolves and it was an important job.

I enjoyed learning so much about your trips to exciting places. I hope to travel in my life to see exotic animals and places, just as you have. I am looking forward to your new books!

I think the author was great! I recommend that others read his books because they have lots of details in them and they are like watching movies in your head. Mr. Smith really explains the history of writing his books and gives lots of details about the characters.

It was awesome having Mr. Smith come to Sitka! It's always fun meeting authors. He shared his writing process which is similar to what we use at The SEER School and this was impressive. It was also interesting to hear how thoroughly he researches things before he writes. He actually goes to the places, gets a view of the locations, and then he writes about them in his books. That's cool!

Thanks for the post, Nicholas. We were very happy to have the SEER School participate. We heard SEER students on "The Talk of Alaska."

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to bring Roland Smith to Sitka! When authors come to town, the experience becomes a gift to Sitka students, teachers, and families. We are a well-read community and having the chance to visit face to face with Roland Smith was great fun! My students will remember this visit for the rest of their lives.
