I just started reading this book- so far, so good. I do have questions about the Masai and the poaching laws in Africa. I wonder if the punishment for illegally hunting in Africa is the same as in the U.S. Back to reading...

I'm only page 15, but I agree- I don't like the step-dad at all. He doesn't seem to think about Jake and his loss. I can't believe how well Roland Smith creates characters in just a few pages. I'm already rooting for Jake, wanting to meet the dad (who seems very in touch with nature), and hoping Sam goes away! The tragedy made me cry- again, Roland Smith is amazing!

Ya, Sam needs to be a little more compassionate! I mean the jerk just tries to forget about every thing and dives into his work because he can't handle it?! I mean i'm not saying he shouldn't grieve but at least take a little time to remember her! And stop trying to send your step son away! My goodness!

Do you think there's something up with Sam? After reading other Roland Smith books, I can't help but wonder if there isn't a twist related to Sam...he even has the same name as Sam Sebesta- the custodian...??? Hmmmm....
Remember- every stroy has to have a conflict in order to be interesting. I wonder is this is a hidden conflict????

This book is really good. The first sentence had me wanting more! I'm right now reading the part where Jacob is about to board his plane. I don't really like Sam. He pretends that Jacob's mother didn't even exist and seems a little harsh to him. I mean, the kid just lost his mom, Sam should at least be there for him

Here's a link with good info on the Nguruman Escarpment- where Jake is headed. It's a real place in Kenya.

Here's a link to learn more about the Maasai People. Very interesting.
    http://www.africaguide.com/culture/tribes/maasai.htm

I also just read an article about the drought in Kenya and how the people and elephants are struggling to survive.
    http://in.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idINIndia-43185520091015

Apparently many river beds are lined with dead elephants and their tusks- all that remains of their body.

Last link-http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/kenya/090326/elephant-poaching-problem-kenya Interesting info about elephants and poaching or killing illegally.

That is a million dollar question. So much money/aid/food is given to Africa but the corrupt governments keep it or sell it. The people who need it the most- good, honest, hard working people, don't get anything.

I can't believe all that happened to Jake-mugged, beaten, steals back his bike, and then out in the African wild by himself. I can decide if I admire him or think he's crazy. He's giving me anxiety. I was very proud of him for taking back his bike. I don't know how he sleeps at night- lions, tigers, and bears...oh my!

I just finished Part 2, page 150. I really like this story- great action, unbelievable events- lions, bush fires, muggings.
I really like Supeet- pg 115, talks about goals, and pg 120, talks about seeing things, especially the everyday things. I really like Supeet's simple way of viewing the world. I wish I could view each day with such clarity and purpose. He's an admirable character. I like Roland Smith's message.

Sarah- Supeet is my favorite character as well. He's strong, smart, and thoughtful. He thinks before acting and also understands the truth of choice- we all have a choice even when we think we don't. I wish the end had more about Supeet. Hopefully, Roland Smith will write another book and Supeet will be in it.

I just finished Thunder Cave- WOW! I can't believe the book went by so fast. There was never a dull moment. I agree with Kaley that Mr. Smith needs to pick this story up again and let us know what happens to Jake and his dad. I can't imagine Jake's father will be content in NYC- he wasn't before. I also can't imagine him leaving the elephants that so need him. I also want to know about Supeet; he was such an amazing character. I hated what happened to the elephant at the end, but I felt that made the story more believable, more real. Not all stories end well in real life and not everything is fair. I like that Roland Smith brings truth into his fiction. Great book!!!
