Shaw Elementary
Ben's last stop on his Alaska trip is Shaw Elementary school where students will will greet him with welcome banners featuring linocuts of bears! Shaw's students have been reading his books. Once class prepared for his visit by listening to a CD of "Touching Spirit Bear" while following along in a class set. In the library, Ms. Guest has been talking to the students about Ben Mikaelsen, his story, and his passion for writing. They have learned that his books are grounded in research. Students have also been fascinated by Buffy the Bear!

My favorite book that Ben Mikaelsen was “Touching Spirit Bear” because it taught me many steps of why you should follow and the price you have to pay for your mistakes. I also liked it because it taught you how to work hard for survival. Otherwise I thought you were a good writer of your survival and adventure books. Thank you for making interesting books for us to read.

I REALLY LIKE YOUR BOOKS. MOSTLY BECAUSE Their ABOUT THE OUTDOORS AND Adventure. In the book touching spirit bear, Cole learned something and so did I. I learned to think before my actions. I hope you like my compliment!!!!!

Ben mikaelsen you are my favorite author because I rely like the story that you told to us. The book toutching spirit bear was very interesting. Because when coal beat up peter. But when he went to the island. He learned a lesson from the spirit bear.

Ben Mikaelsen is my favorite author. It would be cool if he could come again. And I wish I had a pet bare that would be cool. You should writ a small book about when you left the gat open. And do you no if some one has ever eaten a mouse to live. That most stink that you got build a lot I wish I got a book singed from you. I thick I am going read more of your books

My favorite part of Ben Mikaelsen’s speech was his life story. I especially liked the parts about writing under his blankets at night and his story about his college paper looking like a pizza. I really liked the story about Buffy making a mess in the bathroom and the trouble he got into. He did a really good job on his speech.

I would recommend Ben’s books because he is a very creative writer! My favorite book that I have read of his was Touching Spirit Bear. I plan on reading the sequel of Touching Spirit Bear. My favorite part of the speech was when he showed us pictures of Buffy. Buffy is Ben’s 700 pound bear. I like how Ben saved Buffy because I have a BIG heart for animals! Thank you for coming to our school. Go Sundogs! Ahhoooooo! KEEP WRITING!!!

You did a really cool and nice speech! I wish I could here that story again! My favorite part of your speech was when you said that Buffy your pet bear would chew up your papers of your books. I also liked the story about Buffy coming into your bathroom and messing it all up. Then you had to buy new curtains for your shower! That was real funny! My favorite part of your book Touching Spirit Bear was when Cole was trying to help Peter on the island and they both saw the spirit bear! You are a great author!!

I thought that was so cool. The funniest thing that he did was trying to spelling the word ‘the’ the way he spelled was ‘th oh e’ My favorite Book is the sprit bear. The 1st and 2nd one I love Buffy.

I think that Ben’s books are creative. He wrote his books about his about his life. Ben’s books teach you that it is okay to be different. His book Touching Spirit Bear is a great book that teaches you about life. It is very nice of Ben to come to our school and even other schools to talk to us about his life story himself and to talk about all his books. One of his stories was about Buffy. Buffy is Ben’s bear that came to him as a bear cub. Buffy weighs like 750 pounds I think. Ben said that even if you speak a different language you should not be counted as different in a bad way. Thank you for coming and speaking to us. You’re a great writer and you should keep writing forever!!! By the way I wish we could have met Buffy. He is so CUTE!!!

I liked your book TOUCHING SPIRT BEAR. It was a very cool and adventurous book. It was kind of scary at some points. I liked when they went to the island but I didn’t really think the main character should have burnt down the cabin. Then I think it was a good idea that Cole built up the cabin because without any help. I like when the sprit bear came out and attacked Cole because he deserved it for what he did to the cabin. It was really funny when they made Cole get in the very cold pond then roll the ancestor rock down the hill. I think Cole learned a lot about what is right and wrong. It thought me a lot of lessons. You are very cool I hope you like what I have said.

Dear Ben Mikaelsen, thank you for coming over to our school I really enjoyed it!!!! When you were telling us your stories I thought that is was really good!!!! When you told us about Buffy when he got in the bathtub it made me laugh so heard!!! I also light when you told us when Buffy ate a page of your story and when you thought that a soccer ball was a foot ball now I and my friend laugh!!! At that to and you Are a really nice guy at least I think…. I think that the story you told us was the best story I have heard all week and touching spirit bear was the best book so far!!!!

I loved Ben Mickealson. He was so hilarious! He made me laugh so much! I loved how he told us about his childhood and how he got through it! It was definitely something that I would think about later in my life. I would like for him to come again sometime. It was very inspiring. I loved the pictures of Buffy, Ben Mickealson’s bear. I would definitely like to have a pet like his. I like the way that he shared a lot of his thoughts with us and that he trusted us. He is very nice and makes a lot of jokes with us. Which I loved! I loved all of the jokes and stories that he told us about him and Buffy, his bear. Ben Mickealson will always be remembered. I hope that he liked Shaw because Shaw LOVED him! When he came I thought that he would be just like any other author but I definitely changed my mind. Touching Spirit Bear was a wonderful book. I could not put it down! Our class read it together on tape. I was so tempted to read more. I also read your sequel The Ghost of Spirit Bear. It was definitely one of my favorite books. Ben Mickealson is terrific. I loved that he was open and fun. He I just like all of us except he is taller and definitely funnier!

I think that Ben did a great speech about what kind of books he did like touching spirit bear a great book. I’m not exactly sure about what he said because I was not there on Friday. But touching spirit bear and what the boy did to peter and gravy and others. And how he said sorry to them. It was an awesome book and most of the time I thought of what the characters and the characters acted. Ben is a great author.

I thought Bens visit was great. My favorite thing he shared with us was about Buffy when he got in the bath tub that made me crack up laughing. I also laughed when you thought that a foot ball was a soccer ball. I also think Buffy is the cutest thing I ever saw. The only book of yours I have read was Touching Spirit Bear I loved that book. I liked the jokes that Ben told. I all so liked it when he told the school about his life and his bear I also liked that Ben was not stern. I have read one of his books it was Touching Spirit Bear. It was a really cool book because it was in Alaska and he touched the spirit bear.

Ben Mikaelsen visited my school Friday March 6, 2009. I loved it. My favorite parts were when he told us about his life experiences and his bear Buffy. I mostly liked it because he was REALLY funny. I hope we see him again some day.

Ben Mikaelsen visited my school on Friday march 6th. It was a REALLY funny performance. His life story was amazing! From a kid who couldn’t spell the, to an amazing author. I would like to ask you how Buffy is doing, I think it would be soooo cool to have a bear. I would like to thank you for coming to my school.
