Blatchley Middle School, Sitka
Seventh grade teacher Alexander Allison borrowed copies of "Touching Spirit Bear" from the Alaska Spirit of Reading program and read the book with his classes. Eighth graders read "Petey" and have questions about Petey, the mice, and Ben Mikaelsen. Autumn was selected as the author ambassador and has been taking photographs at all the Sitka events.
Ben will get a break in the middle of the day to experience a Blatchley tradition - lunch bunch in the teachers' room. We are waiting to see what kind of chocolate dessert Bobbi Jordan will make!

I wish we had Ben at Kettleson again...

I really enjoyed reading Touching Spirit Bear. I felt like I was Cole and the things that he went through were so detaled and relistic. I loved the plot of the story it was amazing and griping. I hope to read more books like it.

Reading Ben's book Touching Spirit Bear was really fun. I learned that you you can never get rid of anger. It will always be there. I also learned that everyone needs a chance and that no one should be singled out.

Having Ben comming to our school was soo cool!! I enjoyed listening to him talking about his past as a little kid. It was fun to see his slide show of his pictures of him and buffy. His laugh was funny
Reading about touching spirit bear was such a interesting book. I could imagine Cole and Peter Carving out of the totem pole, and how they would go into the pond and soak. I learned that life is just a circle. One of my favorite parts is when cole finally cares about something and how he thinks everything is beauty.

I really loved the philosophical ideas in Touching Spirit Bear. So much thought seems to have been put in the book! It was good to hear that you can still be an exceptional writer even if you have spelling issues (because I certainly do). I was very impressed.

I loved Touching Spirit Bear! I feel that the book deals with the empty feeling that being alone can come with, in a very realistic way. Thanks again Ben for taking time out of your busy schedule to come and talk to us.

I enjoyed your speech and every picture you have showed us. Touching Spirit Bear is one of the best book I have ever read. I hope I will find another one of your books and get a chance to read it. It would be wonderful if you visited us again. Please keep writing every story you think of and be as creative as possible.

I really liked your presentation. I loved Petey. It was a really good book. It even made me cry at the end. I liked how you told us about believing in your dreams. I also understand how you felt when you were bullied. When I was younger, I got bullied all the time. Thanks to you, I am going to stand up to my bullies. I am also going to stand up for people who are being bullied. Thank you so much for coming and talking to our school. I hope you write more books.

As a stuednt reporter for Sitka's public radio station, I was honored to have the oppertunity to spend some extra time with Ben for my audiopostcard, and I can tell you that the information I learned is priceless. The picnic we went on, where we ate hot dogs, read a passage from "Touching Spirit Bear", and some of us even went for a dip in the ocean! The audiopostcard will soon be on the radio's website, ravenradio.org.
